Disassembling and re-constructing the piece of disposable costume jewellery didn’t instantly fill my brain with ideas. I felt the outcome wouldn’t reflect my personal style as it would still be made of parts that were designed and produced by someone else. I decided to take a different approach and simply take inspiration from the piece rather than physically using it. This decision led me into a one day design based project. I applied the same process to the piece as I do with my own collections of contemporary jewellery along with employing a strict time limit.

10am - Preliminary sketches- translate what I see into pencil drawings

12pm - Manipulate and customise these sketches into new forms and patterns

3pm - Start applying a colour pallet that reflects the initial stimulus; in this case it is gold paired with soft pink and green which is reflected in the beads and chain

5pm onwards – Create 3D models of proposed compositions, including all three aspects of form, pattern and colour…

I wanted my final outcome to be an integral part of the design process so I used a design sheet to arrange my end proposal. I also wanted to utilise a material that was in-keeping with the ‘consumable and disposable’ jewellery theme. As a result I used card, a cheap and disposable material.

The project has provided me with a basis from which to build a firm collection of related pieces with a contemporary art jewellery twist.
